The Lhasa Expedition is a curated overland drive across India, Nepal, and Tibet, designed for travellers who seek the rare intersection of adventure, culture, and discovery.

Over sixteen days, the expedition travels through dramatically evolving landscapes — from the plains of northern India to Nepal’s jungle reserves, Himalayan valleys, and the vast high-altitude plateau of Tibet.

Participants explore some of the most iconic destinations of the Himalayas, including the sacred city of Lhasa, the turquoise waters of Yamdrok Lake, and the legendary Everest Basecamp.

Along the way, the journey reveals ancient monasteries, remote Tibetan villages, dramatic mountain passes, and spiritual sites that have shaped Himalayan culture for centuries.

Led by Madcap Luxe expedition hosts, route captains, and local Tibetan guides, the experience combines structured convoy travel with immersive exploration, ensuring both comfort and authenticity throughout the journey.

The Frontier Begins Delhi → Gorakhpur
The expedition begins across the great expressways of northern India as the convoy heads toward the Himalayan frontier. Arrival in Gorakhpur marks the first gathering of the expedition circle.
Wilderness of the Terai Gorakhpur → Chitwan
Enter Nepal and arrive in the jungles of Chitwan National Park, home to rhinos, crocodiles, and rich wildlife ecosystems
Roads to the Himalayas Chitwan → Kathmandu
Drive through winding hill roads and river valleys toward Nepal’s vibrant capital before exploring the cultural district of Thamel.
Cultural Kathmandu
Explore the sacred landmarks of Kathmandu including Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and the historic Durbar Square.
Entering Tibet Kathmandu → Gyirong
Cross the Sino–Nepal border and enter the Tibetan plateau, where dramatic landscapes and Himalayan ridges define the beginning of the Tibet chapter
Across the Tibetan Plateau Gyirong → Shigatse
Drive through vast plateau landscapes and high-altitude river valleys toward Shigatse, Tibet’s second largest city.
Arrival in Lhasa Shigatse → Lhasa
Cross the mighty Yarlung Tsangpo River and arrive in Lhasa, the spiritual heart of Tibet.
The Sacred City Lhasa Exploration
Visit the iconic Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple, before exploring the vibrant pilgrimage circuit of Barkhor Street.
Monasteries of Tibet
Drive to the serene Dark Yerpa meditation caves and explore the historic Sera Monastery.
Lakes of the Plateau Lhasa → Shigatse
One of the most spectacular drives of the expedition, passing Yamdrok Lake, Carola Glacier, and Gyantse Palchoe Monastery
Everest Horizon Shigatse → Everest Region
Journey toward the legendary Everest Basecamp, visiting the historic Sakya Monastery along the way.
Across the Himalayas Everest Region → Gyirong
Begin the return journey across the Tibetan plateau through vast mountain landscapes.
Farewell to Tibet Gyirong → Kathmandu
Descend from the Tibetan plateau and return to Nepal’s capital.
Birthplace of Buddha Kathmandu → Lumbini
Visit Maya Devi Temple and the sacred gardens of Lumbini, birthplace of Gautama Buddha.
The Final Road Gorakhpur → Delhi
The convoy returns to Delhi, completing one of the most extraordinary overland journeys across the Himalayas.

Do I need to drive, or can I participate without driving?
Self-drive is the core experience, but chauffeur-driven options are available on request (at an additional cost) for participants who prefer to indulge without being behind the wheel.
Can I travel with my family?
Yes, you can. Seats can be booked for each family member, and in case you’d like to use one car for more than two participants, a dedicated vehicle can be arranged for up to four members. This also comes with a preferential price benefit. For comfort and experience, we limit it to a maximum of four per car.
